A Day in the Life of an Apprentice – Business Travel Consultant, Eilidh McInnes

Tell us a little bit about you?

My name is Eilidh I’m 18 and I’m from the Edinburgh office. I’m currently training to become a Travel consultant through my Business Travel apprenticeship.

Since High school I knew I wanted to work in the Travel and tourism industry. It was always the one subject I loved but I could never decide if I wanted to work in the Cabin Crew side or a travel agency side (Two very different jobs I know). After my first year of college I came across one of the first apprenticeships in Scotland for travel and tourism and I just knew that’s what I wanted to do. After getting the job last year I haven’t looked back since.

How would you describe a typical work day?

A Typical day in work starts at 9 for me every morning. I always like to keep myself busy so I’m always looking at emails, organising and booking clients travel, sending out reports and doing lots of college work when I can. Sometimes I can be given extra jobs that help the office out which always allows me to be busy.

What are your main responsibilities?

My Main responsibilities are sending out my office Travel alerts, charity committee duties, social committee duties, organise office incentives, send out unvoiced/blue and red reports, assisting the team with booking’s and reservations that are not as complex and lastly keeping up with my college work.

What are your career aspirations after you finish your apprenticeship?

My Career aspirations after I finish my apprenticeship is to become an official business travel consult within Clarity and to one day even become a college Travel lecturer.

What advice would you give to someone else looking to do an apprenticeship?

Anyone looking to do an apprenticeship, if it’s ever an option in the industry you have an interest in, go for it! Being able to learn and train on the job and get a qualification whilst still getting paid is an amazing alternative to college/Uni that isn’t really highlighted enough. Actually, being able to see, take in and do the same things you would have only learnt in higher education allows you to learn on the job and give you a better understanding. It also means you can work and become more independent whilst not having to pay any student loans back!

What’s your dream travel destination?

My Dream Travel destination would be Thailand or Fiji. I have always travelled in Europe and I would love to explore elsewhere and see new beautiful places in the world!
